More impressions of Australia

  1. From bottom to top:
1./2. We met a German guy with his two camels (Snowy and Wilhelm) somewhere in front of the NT/WA border. Apparantly, he's been travelling around Australia for over 15 years, first with his bike and for seven years now with his two camels and self-made carriage, which he uses to transport his belongings (not much, obviously). He doesn't even sit on the carriage, but walks beside his camels to save their energy. It was funny to find out he's originally from Rietberg;-) - crazy Germans! Anyway, we left all our fruits and veggies for the camels, which we otherwise would have had to through out, since you're not allowed to bring anything fresh into WA.
    3. Kununurra - like a salvation after having been driving through the outback for days! Kununurra is a rather small, but cosy and amazingly green town in the middle of nowhere. We especially enjoyed it, since it was the first time after several days that we could use the internet and had an opportunity to get our groceries.
    4. Somewhere on the way towards the West Coast - there was a moderatly long hiking track (about 3km return) that was supposed to be very scenic and worth walking. However, it was boiling hot and the track predominently consisted of soft sand, i.e. hard to walk on. The view was good, but the walk was pretty demanding (walking in over 40°C is actually quite a challenge).
    5. The biggest Boab tree in the world, situated in Derby. Boab trees soak up water in the wet season in order to store it for the dry season and live from it. As you can see, it was dry season when the picture was taken, i.e. the tree was even bigger!

  2. The Boab tree is an amazing phenomenon in its own right, and to see it in person will be wonderful.
I love the images you are sharing here. They will be an important part of story telling for when you are teaching and also when you are showing your own children in years to come :)
